An Epidemiological Study of Accidents: a Cross-sectional Study of ۶ Years

Background and Aim: Injuries are currently considered a serious health and socioeconomic problem worldwide and the second leading cause of mortality in Iran. Then, we investigated the epidemiological profile of accidents in the Mashhad city during ۲۰۰۹ to ۲۰۱۴ years.Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study of six years was conducted on ۳۹۸۷۱ people between March ۲۰۰۹ and March ۲۰۱۴ years in the Iranian city of Mashhad. Data was extracted from Accident Information System (AIS) developed by Ministry of Health of Iran. To present descriptive characteristics, the mean and standard deviation was used. Chi-square test was used to measure the differences among qualitative variables and outcome of the accident based on gender. Logistic regression model was used to measure relationship between age groups and gender with type of accidents. P-value of <۰.۰۵ was considered as significant.Results: The mean of people was ۲۸.۲۱ ± ۱۷.۱۶ ranged ۰- ۹۹ years. Of those screened, ۲۷۰۸۲ (۶۷.۹%) and ۱۲۷۸۹ (۳۲.۱%) were accordingly male and female. Given the region of the study, the most accidents were happen in the town ۱۹۱۷۸ (۷۰.۸%) for men and ۸۴۱۵ (۶۵.۸%) for women. In addition, motorcycle ۵۹۳۴ (۲۱.۹%) and car accidents ۲۸۹۲ (۲۲.۶%) were accordingly the most accidents happen in men and women in terms of type of the accidents with a significant difference (p=۰.۰۰۱). In all types of accidents, males were at higher risk of accidents compared to females with significant differences.Conclusion: Motorcycle and car traffic accidents had the highest frequency of events; therefore traffic regulations to reduce problems appeared to be likely useful.
