چکیده مقاله:

Objectives: The primary purpose of this study was to determine whether heavy vehicle occupants have higher odds of neck-related fatalities than other vehicle occupants. This study also aims to investigate the determinants of neck injury-related fatalities among other vehicle occupants compared to heavy vehicle ones. Methods: Using East Azerbaijan Forensic Medicine Data for the period 2016–2019, this study investigates the fatalities of heavy vehicle occupants due to crash. Neck injury-related fatality was used as the study outcome for all vehicle occupants to evaluate whether various factors (e.g., vehicle type, accident mechanism, age, and sex) are related to crash fatality of those who used heavy vehicles. Data analysis was executed using STATA 14.Results: Among 2182 vehicle occupants, the proportion of heavy vehicles registered for neck injuries was higher than those of other vehicles (79/13 (14.13%)). However, the multiple logistic regression model showed that, after adjustment of this result for factors such as vehicle type, accident mechanism, age, and sex, bus/ minibus users and car/pickup truck/ambulance users were 70% and 47% significantly less likely to be subjected to neck injuries compared to heavy vehicle occupants, respectively (AOR: 0.30, 95% CI 0.11 to 0.79; AOR: 0.53, 95% CI 0.28 to 0.98). Other factors were independent of determining neck-related injuries among crash fatalities. Conclusions: the results of current study underscore the importance of reducing fatality due to neck injuries among heavy vehicle occupants
