Effect of Hydro-alcoholic extract of Verbascum speciocum on the wound healing of diabetic mice

Diabetes mellitus has spread rapidly in the world and threatens human health and by 2030 the number of people affected is expected to double. More than three-quarters of the patients have a variety of ulcers.In some cases, high blood sugar in diabetics prevents wound healing, which may even lead to amputation. Today, the use of medicinal herbs has been considered in order to protect the wounds, including diabetic wounds, in many countries. The aim of this project is to investigate the properties of V.speciocum, a native Iranian herb, for the healing of diabetic ulcers.In this project, 24 male mice (30-35 g) who were infected with 200 mg/kg streptozotocin (STZ) with intraperitoneal injection have been diabetic, were used in two groups: 1- Diabetic mice treated with Eucerin as control group, 2-Diabetic mice treated with V.speciocum extract as treatment group. After anesthetizing and creating 5 mm diameter scars on the back of all mice(4 holes), the wounds of both groups were treated for six days(once a day at a certain time) by Eucerin and Hydro-alcoholic extract of V. speciocum Which was condensed and prepared by soaking.In the treatment group, the extract 25 and 50 wt% of V. speciocum in the Eucerin substrate were exposed by swabs on the left and right wounds. At the same time, every day and until the 6th day, macroscopic imaging and wound surface measurements were taken from mice wounds. To measure the wound surface from Imagej software (wound area calculation at mm2)and the results were analyzed by SPSS software.The results showed that the size of the wound surface in the treated group with the extract of V. speciocum decreased more rapidly.Hydro-alcoholic extract of V. speciocum is effective in the treatment of diabetic wounds.
