Sarcoma of extremities, a single center report.

Introduction: The most common site of sarcoma is in extremities. Lower extremity is a more common site of sarcoma rather than upper extremities. The main challenge in treatment of sarcoma in extremity may be limb sparing directed treatment strategies. Methods and materials: this is a retrospective study on our patients who had sarcoma during 2006-2012. Results: We had 44 cases of extremities sarcoma during 2006-2012 and mean age was 45.54 (±15.82) years. The mean tumor size was 9.84 (±4.83) cm. Among 44 patients, 18(41%) were male and 26(59%) patients were female. Most (11) patients had liposarcoma. The next common types of sarcomas were MPNST (6) and MFH (5) and then leiomyosarcoma (4). 34 (77.3%) patients received RT with a mean dose of 4375 (±246) cGy. Chemotherapy was given in 12(28%) patients. And chemotherapy regimens were MAID. Mean DFS was 34.5(±36.72) and overall survival was (the mean of follow up time was 51(±32.35) month and the median of survival time was68.81month). The most common site of metastasis was lung. Discussion: In one report, the local control rate in 95 patients with extremity STS treated with radiation therapy followed by resection was 47 versus 87 percent in patients with and without tumor violation, respectively. For patients who require RT, preoperative RT is preferred in many patients based upon results from a randomized Canadian trial that demonstrated similar efficacy with preoperative as compared to postoperative RT, but a lower rate of generally irreversible late complications, including grade 3 to 4 fibrosis, with the preoperative approach. In a study, rates of local control, disease-free survival, and overall survival after 5 years for the entire cohort were 76, 47, and 65 percent, respectively that is comparable to our study. Conclusion: extremities are a common site for sarcoma and outcome is similar to sarcoma in other site of body.
