The Role of Natural Treatment Systems for Wastewater Treatment

During the past decade, numerous constructed wetlands have been installed and in Australia for treatment of waste-water and the amelioration of water pollution arising from non-point sources. Studies of these systems have demonstrated that they can reduce the concentrations of organic matter, suspended solids and indicator bacteria by<90%, while requiring relatively little maintenance. Constructed wetlands are also being increasingly used for polishing of already treated wastewater, as an adjunct to conventional effluent treatment technologies.
