Urban Design Approach Using Urban Planning Demands in Planning Process

Urban design is the art of creating and shaping cities and towns. It involves the arrangement and design of buildings, public spaces, transport systems, services, and amenities. It is the process of giving form, shape, and character to groups of buildings, to whole neighborhoods, and the city. This article considers the factors contributing to the recent international trend for a differentiation between planning and urban design. It considers these highly related fields from the perspective of neoliberalism, global competition, and New Urbanism. The article argues that urban design needs to be retained as an important subset of planning practice, concerned with the physical design of cities, so that the core planning values of serving the public interest in the attainment of social equity, democratic civil society, and an ecologically sustainable future may be maintained in our city-building processes. Urban planning and urban design are separated disciplines. To improve interaction between these two, an interactive urban design (IUD) tool has been developed. Other focus of this article was to clarify the tool implemented in a Desk-Cave allowing for direct manipulation of masses and with immediate feedback on the urban planning program performance. In a small-scale experiment, the tool proved to improve compliance of the urban design with the planning requirements without obstructing the design process
