The Association between Caring Behavior and Death Anxietyamong Iranian Nurses Working in Covid-۱۹ Wards

Introduction: Nurses who are at the forefront of the fight against Covid-۱۹ have facedproblems such as anxiety and stress due to the high contagiousness of this disease and thechallenges of providing services to infected patients. Death anxiety and the resulting fearfollowing the Covid-۱۹ pandemic can affect caring behaviors and the quality of nursing careservices.Objective: The present study was conducted with the aim of determining the associationbetween caring behaviors and death anxiety among Iranian nurses working in COVID-۱۹wards.Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in ۲۰۲۱ in Tehran. The participantsconsisted of ۲۳۳ nurses who were purposively selected from university hospitals in Iran. Datacollection tools included Demographic Information Form, Death Anxiety Scale (DAS), andCaring Dimension Inventory (CDI-۲۵). Data analysis was done using SPSS (version ۱۶).Results: Most of the participants were female (۷۹.۴%), had less than five years of workexperience (۵۰.۶%), and had bachelor's degree (۸۸.۸%). Based on the results, the level of deathanxiety among nurses was moderate (۷.۰۵ ± ۳.۸۵) and their caring behavior was at optimallevel (۱۰۳.۰۳ ± ۱۳.۱۵). Among the subscales of caring behavior,Physical-technical behaviors with mean of ۴۶.۴۳±۶.۲۰ got the highest score and unnecessarybehaviors with mean of۴.۳۹±۰.۷۳ got the lowest score compared to other subscales. Based on data analysis findings,caring behavior and its dimensions had no significant correlation with nurses' death anxiety(p=۰.۱۱۱).Conclusions: Our results showed that despite having a moderate level of anxiety, nurses try toprovide good care behaviors to patients with covid-۱۹. However, reducing nurses' anxiety canimprove caring behaviors.
