Exploring the Casualties of Hookah Consumption in Beaches of BandarAbbas: A Qualitative Study among Southern Iranian Men

Background: One of the forms of tobacco consumption, especially in the south of Iran, is hookahconsumption. Hormozgan province is the third most used hookah province in Iran.Methods: The aim of this study was to identify the causes of hookah consumption among men inBandar Abbas, the largest city and the capital of Hormozgan province in southern Iran. Thisqualitative study was conducted in six months at the end of ۱۴۰۰(SH) and the beginning of۱۴۰۱(SH) on ۷۶ men who used hookah at the place where hookah was sold on the shores ofBandar Abbas.Results: By content analysis, ۱۲ categories of reasons for hookah consumption were extracted.which included individual, family, companionship with friends, physical, psychological, economicpressure, cultural background, positive opinion about hookah, unemployment, geographicalconditions, frustration and freedom from everyday life and life issues, availability and abundanceof hookah supply. Among these reasons for using hookah, the physical and psychological factorsin the pleasure of using hookah and then the factor of easy access and large supply of hookah onthe beaches of Bandar Abbas were more prominent.Conclusion: This study showed that the need for preventive interventions in hookah consumptionin the southern city of Bandar Abbas is evident. Long-term interventions such as improving thehealth literacy of community members, cultural reform of hookah consumption among people canlead to the reduction of hookah and tobacco use. Short-term interventions that can be designed andimplemented by provincial policy makers and health decision makers. The influential cases thatinclude the legal ban on the sale of hookah on the beaches, the lack of permission to sell tobacco on the beaches, the increase and creation of modern and accessible healthy fun and entertainmentat low cost on the beaches
