Background: Aims Water pipe smoking, especially among young people, has been on the rise andthe increasing prevalence of tobacco use among students is worrying. The aim of this study was toinvestigate the effect of educational intervention based on the theory of planned behavior onpreventing water pipe smoking in secondary school students.Methods: This semi-experimental study was performed on ۴۰۰ students from high school boystudents (۲nd and ۳rd) of Fasa city in ۲۰۱۸-۲۰۱۹. The subjects were selected by cluster randomsampling method and divided into control (n=۲۰۰) and experimental (n=۲۰۰) groups. Theintervention was based on planned behavior theory model for the experimental group in ۷ sessionsof ۵۰-۵۵ minutes. A questionnaire including demographic information, theory of planned behaviorconstructs and preventive behaviors of water pipe smoking in high school students were completedbefore and three months after intervention by both groups. Data were analyzed by SPSS ۲۲software using Chi-square, independent and paired t-tests.Results: There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of knowledge,attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, intent and preventive behaviors of waterpipe smoking pre intervention (p>۰. ۰۵). However, in the three months after intervention, theexperimental group showed a significant increase in any of these variables (p=۰. ۰۰۱), while therewas no significant difference in the control group (p>۰. ۰۵).Conclusion: The educational intervention based on the theory of planned behavior is effective onpreventing water pipe smoking in secondary school students
