Investigating the Reasons for Using Smokeless Tobacco AmongAdolescents:A narrative review

Background: The use of smokeless tobacco Is a public health problem all over the world, whichhhas more than three hundred million consumers around the globe, and It also causes complicationssuch as cancer of the mouth, throat, and esophagus. Smokeless tobacco consists of Ingredientssuch as tobacco and various additives that are consumed by chewing, sucking, or snorting.According to the growing trend of the consumption of these substances among teenagers, In thepresent study, the researchers decided to Investigate the reasons for the consumption of thesesubstances by teenagers.Methods: The current study Is a short review study that was designed In ۲۰۲۲. By searchinginternational and national databases, articles were collected from ۲۰۱۶ to ۲۰۲۲ examining thereasons for adolescents' smokeless tobacco use.After reviewing the search results, finally, ۴۵studies were used to write this study.Results: Among the most important reasons for the consumption of smokeless tobacco among thisage group are the Influence of peers, rebelliousness, and excitement (a way to rebel and showindependence), Intelligent marketing tactics of the tobacco industry in attracting teenagers, the useof smokeless tobacco products by Friends or family members, lack of parental support orInvolvement in adolescent upbringing, availability and reasonable price of smokeless tobaccoproducts, low education level.Conclusion: Due to the Importance of the topic and the serious side effects of smokeless tobaccouse among teenagers, It is suggested that the necessary training to be aware of the side effects ofusing these substances and also the skills to Increase self-esteem should be done In schools. Due tothe low amount of studies conducted regarding the reasons for smokeless tobacco consumption Inteenagers, it Is suggested that more .studies be conducted In this regard.
