The prevalence of smoking and diabetes mellitus in Fars province in ۱۴۰۰AH: A cross-sectional study

Background: Smoking and diabetes mellitus (DM) are both risk factors for non-communicablediseases. Their simultaneous presence can significantly increase the chances of non-communicablediseases The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of smoking and diabetes mellitus inFars province.Methods: A cross-sectional study was designed on registered data in Fars province. Thepopulation over ۳۰ years old covered by Shiraz University of Medical Sciences (SUMS) wasinvestigated. Out of them, who were evaluated for cardiovascular risk assessment were consideredas sample size. Data were calculated by the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version۱۶.Results: At ۱۴۰۰ AH, the population over ۳۰ years old covered by Shiraz University of MedicalSciences (SUMS) was ۲,۳۷۱,۸۵۲ persons. Out of them of ۷۶۴۰۰۹ individuals assessed forcardiovascular risk, that ۴۷.۱۶ were male. The prevalence of smoking was ۳.۱۶ % (۵.۴ % in malesand ۱.۱۷% in females). The prevalence of DM was ۷.۴ % (۵.۵ % in males and ۹.۰۶ % in females).The prevalence of smoking in DM patients was ۲.۷۲% (۴.۸۷ % in males and ۱.۵۴ in females). Theprevalence of smoking in non-DM subjects was ۳.۲۰% (۵.۴۳ % in males and ۱.۱۴ in females).Conclusion: The results of this study demonstrated that the prevalence of smoking in DM andnon-DM subjects had no difference (۲.۷۲% vs. ۳.۲۰%). It is necessary to pay attention to this issuein consultations.
