چکیده مقاله:

Introduction:Scoliosis is a serious structural disorder that manifests with lateral curvature and rotation of the spine and over time leads to anatomic deformity in the chest. In addition to the physical consequences of scoliosis, patients also experience changes in quality of life and psychosocial emotion that these have negative effect on the subsequent treatment of the patient.Method & Material:This narrative review was done by keywords “Scoliosis AND Needs of patients OR their family OR their parents”, during ۲۰۱۲-۲۰۲۲ throught PubMed, Elsevier, ISI⸲ Nursing orthopedic journal ⸲Springer⸲ Magiran and Google scholar databases and search engineer in English language. Results: Results show that orthopedic patients may experience barriers such as difficulty performing activities of daily living (ADL) and problems returning to life after surgery. For these reasons, the caregiver's role in supporting dependent people in both simple and complex activities is very important. The patient's health conditions can create additional challenges for each family member's role, related to the emotional impact of the diagnosis, the integration of the patient's needs into family's life, and the primary role of caregivers in managing health care treatment. Family members face certain stresses, including the unpredictable progression of spinal curvature and the possibility of invasive spine surgery. This disease increases the levels of stress, depression and feelings of uncertainty, helplessness, loneliness, worry, and social isolation in the caregivers of these patients compared to the family members of the non-afflicted person.Discussion:Researches shows that the needs of families of patients with scoliosis include: the need for reliable medical information, the need for information about complementary therapies for example; back strengthening activities such as Pilates, yoga, the need for supporting their patient, the need for Protection of the patient and family and the need for communication. Considering the importance and complications of this disease, it is necessary to identify and pay attention to the needs of these patients and their family members.
