Studying relationships of subfamily Panicoideae (Poaceae) in Iran with Bayesian and Maximum Parsmony approaches using ITS and MATK sequences

Subfamily Panicoideae include agronomically important crops like rice and sorghum. Phylogeneticrelationships of different members of subfamily Panicoideae occurring in Iran was analyzed using ITS andMATK genes. ۶۲ sequences, representative of ۲۶ species, were provided from NCBI data base. SequencesAlignment for each species was performed using Clustal W. To evaluate the compatibility of the sequences,the ILD test was performed, using Paup. Based on the heuristic search method, the P-value was calculated as۰.۰۰۱ and defined as standard; P-values <۰.۰۵. Different phylogenetic trees were constructed using maximumparsimony and bayasian methods. Among which the tree based on combined data using maximum parsimonyshowed a more significant values as; CI = ۰.۳ and RI = ۰.۴ and was selected for further interpretations.According to the results the two species of Oryza sativa and Poa trivialis belonging to the tribes Oryzoideaeand Pooideae, respectively, were grouped apart from other members of the subfamily. Aristida andStipagrostis were sister genera belonging to the tribe Aristidoideae, which together with the members of thesubfamily Panicoideae make the evolutionary clade of PACMAD and show closer kinship with members ofthis subfamily. Three tribes of Paspaleae, Andropogonaea and Paniceae each created specific clades, creatingmonophyletic groups. The species belonging to the phylogenetically known Centothecoid clade were alsogrouped apart from the rest taxa. However; the relationships among members showed polyphyletic situationswhich could be due to the low number of accessions used in the study. Finally, it is concluded that the ITSand MATK are good markers recognizing relationships in high taxonomic levels and the maximumparsimpony and bayasian methods are a good source of information for such studies.
