The importance of distance education for nurses in controlling blood sugar in patients with diabetes

Learning how to live with diabetes, controlling blood sugar and its complications are crucial challenges that diabetic patients face. One of the most important solutions to this problem is to meet the educational needs of these patients by nurses. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the importance of distance education for nurses in controlling blood sugar in patients with diabetes.Methods: This review study was conducted in 1399 byf searching the Persian and English databases SID, Science Direct, PubMed with the keywords distance education, blood sugar control, diabetes, and nurse, in the period 2008 to 2020. Articles that could not be accessed in full, articles that were not relevant to the study's purpose, and duplicated. Finally, the articles' quality was evaluated based on a checklist of 12 questions of CASP diagnostic test studies, and seven articles related to the research were selected.Results: Out of the 19 articles reviewed, seven were included in the study. Due to the high prevalence of diabetes, frequent follow-up in these people should be a cheap and quick access method. On the other hand, telemedicine in these patients to meet the educational needs and psychological support leads to improved self-care. It also improves the relationship between the patient and the nurse, removes temporal and spatial barriers, and enables the nurse to perform patient monitoring, education, pain control, and family support.Conclusion: Due to the shortage of nurses and the high volume of nurses' work, new methods in educating patients with diabetes are effective and reduce fasting blood sugar in these patients. Therefore, using this method in following the care of other patients with chronic diseases is also recommended. Also, according to nurses' critical role in this training, nurses can be trained in this field, and the necessary facilities can be provided for distance education.
