Machine Room-Less (MRL) elevators are one of the most important developments in the lift industry in recent decades. By eliminating the separate machine room, the hoisting machine, controller and other equipment are installed inside the hoistway itself. This became possible with compact permanent-magnet gearless traction machines, whose sheave is coupled directly to the rotor; the smaller sheave and footprint let the whole assembly fit in the space above the top landing, known as the overhead.

The main advantage of the MRL is the saving in space and construction cost. Removing a machine room of 6 to 12 square metres frees valuable floor area, and in projects where a rooftop machine room cannot be built, it offers a practical solution. A gearless motor with a VVVF drive uses less energy, runs more quietly and with less vibration than a conventional geared machine, and with a regenerative drive it returns part of the braking energy to the building's power network.

But this compactness comes at a price. Access to the machine at the top of the shaft is harder for technicians, so repairs — and the resulting downtime — can take longer. The initial cost is usually higher than a hydraulic lift's, and components are more proprietary and brand-dependent, so choosing a reputable brand with a secure supply of spare parts matters more than ever. MRL lifts are best suited to low- and mid-rise buildings, typically up to about 15 floors and speeds up to 1.75 m/s; in very tall towers or heavy freight applications, the conventional machine-room lift remains the better choice.

In safety terms, an MRL follows the same standards as any traction lift: EN 81-20 and EN 81-50 in Europe and the Iranian national standard ISIRI 6303. The overspeed governor, safety gear, buffers and door locks work exactly as in any traction lift; removing the machine room removes none of these safety links. In short, the MRL is the right choice when building space is limited, traffic is moderate and reliable after-sales service is available; otherwise, the traditional machine room remains a defensible option.
