Soft Robotics: When Robots Take Their Cue from Nature
Traditional robots are usually built from metal and rigid parts. They are precise and powerful, but when they meet humans or fragile objects, they can be stiff and even dangerous. Soft robotics takes a different approach: instead of hard joints and bodies, it uses flexible materials such as silicone, elastomers and hydrogels, so that a robot can bend, stretch and adapt to its surroundings much like living tissue.
At the heart of this technology are soft actuators. The most common are pneumatic actuators: silicone chambers that bend or extend in a pre-designed way when filled with compressed air. A well-known type is the pneumatic artificial muscle (PAM), which contracts in a way similar to a human muscle. Hydraulic, tendon-driven, magnetic and shape-memory-alloy actuators are also used. Importantly, in many soft robots the softness is the mechanism itself: the robot's body is both structure and actuator, so there is no need for a separate motor at every joint.
This feature has opened striking applications. In medicine, soft grippers can move delicate tissues without damage, soft rehabilitation gloves help patients practise movement, and soft robots navigate inside the body during minimally invasive surgery. In agriculture, soft grippers harvest ripe, fragile fruit without bruising it — a task in which rigid metal grippers usually cause waste. Around people, soft robots are inherently safer because they absorb energy on contact instead of delivering a sudden force.
Challenges remain, however. Soft robots produce less force than rigid robots, modelling and precise control are difficult because of their continuous deformation, and elastomeric materials fatigue over repeated cycles. Recent research is moving towards combining softness with strength: soft–rigid hybrid structures, variable-stiffness actuators and self-healing materials. Soft robotics shows that the future of robots lies not only in greater power and precision, but also in adaptability, safety and closeness to nature.
