High Voltage Engineering: From Insulation and Partial Discharge to High-Voltage Testing
Modern power systems transmit energy at voltages of up to several hundred kilovolts, and at this level insulation is the most important factor in equipment reliability. High voltage engineering studies the behaviour of the electric field, insulating materials and breakdown mechanisms so that equipment remains safe under permanent and transient stresses.
The hidden enemy of insulation is partial discharge: a localised electrical discharge that does not completely bridge the space between the electrodes. It usually begins in gas-filled cavities inside solid insulation, because the permittivity of the gas is lower, so a larger share of the field falls across the cavity, while the breakdown strength of the gas is also lower. The result is gradual erosion of the insulation, ozone generation and eventually complete breakdown. The visible form of this phenomenon in air is corona: whenever the voltage gradient at the conductor surface exceeds the dielectric strength of air, about 30 kV per centimetre under standard conditions, the surrounding air becomes ionised and a luminous discharge appears, accompanied by energy losses and radio interference.
To control these stresses, insulation design is based on field control: adequate clearance and creepage distances, equipotential surfaces and corona rings make the field uniform, so that no point reaches the discharge threshold. The choice among gaseous, liquid and solid insulations also depends on dielectric strength, losses and thermal behaviour.
The soundness of this design is verified by standardised tests. IEC 60060 defines power-frequency and impulse voltage withstand tests; the standard lightning impulse, with a front time of 1.2 microseconds and a time to half-value of 50 microseconds, and the 250/2500 microsecond switching impulse simulate the transient overvoltages of the network. The most sensitive tool for assessing insulation health, however, is partial discharge measurement according to IEC 60270, which reports the apparent charge of the discharge in picocoulombs and, by revealing hidden defects early, enables preventive maintenance and a longer service life for transformers, cables and gas-insulated switchgear.
