چکیده مقاله:

Background and Aim : Cognitive function is impaired by increased consumption of high-fat diet (HFD). Feeding an HFD can alter hydrogen sulfide (H2S) metabolism. Given the antioxidant effects of H2S and the fact that high fat intake is associated with an increase in oxidative stress, we hypothesized that H2S will act as a neuroprotective factor. Methods : Following 11 weeks of HFD regimes in Wistar rats, passive avoidance learning (PAL) task was used to evaluate the learning and memory in rats fed a high-fat diet. Daily intraperitoneal injection of sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS), an H2S donor was done during the dietary regimen. Results : We have shown here that HFD consumption is associated with an increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) and total oxidant status (TOS), and a decrease in total antioxidant capacity (TAC) (P Conclusion : In conclusion, these are the first data which suggest that exogenous H2S can reduce oxidative stress and improve memory retention in rats fed an HFD.
