چکیده مقاله:
Introduction: Breast cancer is a high frequent malignancy among women and is the second cause of death after lung cancer all over the world. Thymidylate synthase (TS) converts dUMP to dTMP that is required for DNA synthesis. The most common polymorphism in TS is a double (2R) or triple (3R) 28-bp repeat sequence in the promoter enhancer region that influences protein expression in cancer cells. In the present study, association between polymorphism of TS and breast cancer risk was investigated.Materials & Methods: The DNA samples from100 female breast cancer patients and 141 healthy individuals from the Kermanshah population of Western Iran, were analyzed using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method. Results: The frequency of TS 2R allele in patients and controls were 28 and 52.5%, respectively (Odds ratios (OR) = 0.352, 95%CI 0.24–0.52, P <0.001). Our study indicated a significant association between thymidylate synthase polymorphism and breast cancer risk in Kurdish population from Western Iran. Conclusion: Our results demonstrated a protective role for 2R allele of TS in susceptibility to breast cancer in our population
