Effectiveness of acceptance and commitment (Act) therapy on reduction of depression symptous in women with breast cancer

Introduction: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is one of the behavioral treatments of the third generation in the field of psychological problems. This research is focused on depression disorder and is conducted in order to determine effectiveness of ACT on reducing depression symptoms in women infected to breast cancer. Materials and methods: this research is from the semi -test studies and the pretest and posttest researching plan is conducted in it with the control group. 30 women infected to breast cancer with depression symptoms were selected based on clinical interview and the results gained according to the second version of BDI-II depression questionnaire among women infected to breast cancer referring to Specialized Clinic of Breast Cancer of Jahad Daneshgahi of University of Tehran and they were categorized randomly in two groups of test (15 persons) and control (15 persons ). The ACT was performed for them in 12 sessions of 45 to 60 minutes for the test group and the control group did not receive treatment . The pretest and posttest marks of both groups were analyzed by ANACOVA method. Findings: the ANACOVA statistical test indicated the difference between test and control groups has been significant with the statistical reliability of P=0. 000 and F=84.991. Discussion and conclusion: the results of current research and other similar researches indicate that the depression marks of test group proportioned to control group has reduced significantly. This point is indicative that performing ACT is effective on reducing depression symptoms in women infected to breast cancer.
