Evalution of the local effect of Benzocaine on the beak-Trimming pain

Evaluation of the local effect of Benzocaine on the beak-trimming pain and its consequent weight loss was carried out on 200 day old commercial broiler (strain Ross 308) chicks. The broiler chicks were divided equally into two groups: trial group A and trial group B which were subdivided into 5 groups each. The trial groups were beak-trimmed and evaluated at 1 week and 6 weeks of age, respectively. Benzocaine with different concentration was applied to 2 subgroups in each trial group, One of them just debeaked, and one left as the control subgroup. Benzocaine 10% has the potential to maintain the feed intake and subsequently increase body weight of chicks in the first week after beak-trimming, which probably indicates that some of the acute pain has been relieved.
