The Knoevenagel condensation between malononitrile and aromatic aldehyde in the presence of sudium thiocyanate as a basic catalyst

An efficient Knoevenagel condensation of a series of aldehydes with malononitrile, in the presence of sodium thiocyanate (NaSCN) is described. In this process NaSCN acts as a basic catalyst which can accelerate the Knoevenagel condensation. The products are obtained in excellent yields after short reaction times and NaSCN can be recycled and reused again.
