Beyond Fidelity: The Creative Re-creation of Narrative in Film Adaptation

The adaptation of literary works into films has spurred critical debate, particularly around fidelity criticism, which prioritizes strict loyalty to source texts. This paper challenges such perspectives, drawing on Linda Hutcheon's theory that adaptations are creative reinterpretations, not mere reproductions. Focusing on Joe Wright's ۲۰۰۷ cinematic adaptation of Ian McEwan's Atonement (۲۰۰۱), it examines how character and motivation, central to McEwan's rich psychological portrayals, undergo condensation due to the shift from novel's telling mode to cinema's showing mode. Despite these changes, the adaptation retains the story's core, enhancing its narrative through cinematic techniques, thus affirming adaptations as innovative, autonomous works.
