چکیده مقاله:
Background: Scientific reasoning in sports and exercise science utilizes both inductive and deductive approaches, with models playing a major role in hypothesis formulation, testing, and refinement. However, the complementary nature of these reasoning approaches and their integration in model development has received insufficient attention in the field. Models are often evaluated using disparate criteria without a unified framework for assessing their quality and utility, potentially hindering scientific progress and the translation of research findings into practice. Enhanced model evaluation and application guidelines are needed to maximize knowledge advancement. Methods: This current opinion paper proposes guidelines to enhance model evaluation and application in sports and exercise science. The complementary nature of inductive and deductive reasoning in model creation and refinement is examined, emphasizing how this complementarity maximizes progression of scientific knowledge. Key model characteristics including predictive accuracy, representativeness, complexity, intricacy, explanatory power, and generalizability are critically evaluated using examples from human physical performance research. Results: A two-dimensional schematic is presented to evaluate models based on predictive accuracy and representativeness, categorizing them into data-driven and theory-driven models across a continuum from low to high levels of both characteristics, including an idealized target model. Guidelines for model selection, evaluation, and improvement emphasize maintaining equilibrium between predictive accuracy and representativeness. The importance of falsifiability in model evaluation is highlighted, with clear criteria for assessing model adequacy and identifying areas for refinement. Avenues to increase models' predictive accuracy and representativeness following initial assessment are proposed, including iterative model updating and integration of diverse data sources. Conclusion: Adoption of the proposed guidelines can promote transparent scientific practices and encourage the use of modelling to advance knowledge in sports and exercise science through complementary inductive and deductive approaches. Future research should validate the proposed framework across different subdisciplines and develop practical tools to support its implementation in research and applied settings.
