چکیده مقاله:
Background: Deceleration is a critical locomotor skill for athletes competing in multi-directional speed sports, enabling rapid velocity reductions that facilitate quick changes of direction. The high mechanical forces associated with braking can be linked to heightened risk of fatigue, tissue damage, and injuries. Despite its clear importance in sport, research and applied practices have predominantly focused on assessing sprint acceleration and maximum velocity capabilities, neglecting the necessity to evaluate deceleration ability. With tactical evolutions demanding athletes to accelerate and attain higher sprinting speeds more frequently, there is increased necessity to decelerate and accurately assess this movement skill. Methods: This review synthesizes evidence from biomechanics, sports science, and strength and conditioning literature to examine methodological and practical considerations for assessing deceleration in applied field-based environments. A range of protocols and measurement technologies are critically evaluated, including change of direction tests, acceleration-deceleration ability assessments, radar, laser, video analysis, global navigation satellite systems, inertial measurement units, and motorized resistance devices. Advantages and disadvantages of each approach are systematically examined. Results: The analysis reveals that deceleration assessment requires careful consideration of protocol selection, measurement technology, and key performance metrics. Available protocols vary in their ecological validity, reliability, and practical feasibility. Measurement technologies differ substantially in sampling frequency, accuracy, portability, and cost, influencing their suitability for different applied settings. Key metrics for measuring deceleration performance include deceleration time, distance, rate, and impulse, with kinematic analysis providing valuable insights into braking technique. The assessment of deceleration technique should encompass both linear and change of direction contexts, given the distinct mechanical demands of each. Conclusion: Given the performance, health, and injury-risk implications associated with deceleration, assessment of this movement skill should be given high priority within athlete multi-disciplinary support systems. Future research should establish normative data across different sports and playing levels, develop standardized testing protocols, and investigate the relationship between deceleration ability and injury risk to inform evidence-based training and rehabilitation strategies.
