چکیده مقاله:

CDI is a promising technology that utilizes low energy and is dependent on the characteristics of the electrode material for desalination. In this study, activated carbon electrodes derived from biochar are synthesized and characterized for use in CDI systems. KOH and K۲CO۳ were used to chemically activate biochar to enhance its physicochemical properties for CDI. Activated biochar's structural and chemical characteristics were characterized using FTIR, BET, and XRD. Electrochemical tests and batch deionization experiments were conducted on the fabricated electrodes to evaluate their performance and salt adsorption capacity. There was a significant impact of the activation process on the biochar properties. A BET analysis indicated SBET values of ۱۴۱۵.۹ m۲/g for KOH-activated biochar and ۹۹۰.۶ m۲/g for K۲CO۳-activated biochar. Due to its large surface area and favorable pore structure, KOH-activated biochar has a desalination capacity of ۱۵.۶۵ mg/g, whereas K۲CO۳-activated biochar has a desalination capacity of ۹.۵۸ mg/g. KOH-activated biochar has a higher specific capacitance (۱۶۹.۳ F/g) than K۲CO۳-activated biochar (۱۱۸.۳ F/g). To explore the potential of biomass-derived biochar activated with potassium-based agents as a sustainable and cost-effective alternative for high-performance CDI electrodes, this study investigated biomass-derived biochar activated with potassium-based agents.
