چکیده مقاله:

Don DeLillo's novels, White Noise and Underworld, offer contrasting portraits ofAmerican society, both grappling with anxieties and power struggles within socialfields. This paper explores how DeLillo's masterful use of narrative techniquesilluminates the specific themes of each novel. In White Noise, a fragmentednarrative structure and repetitive language mirror the anxieties and disorientation ofnavigating a singular, all-encompassing field – consumer culture. DeLillo bombardsthe reader with information overload – advertisements, news snippets, academicjargon – mimicking the constant barrage of stimuli characters experience. Thisfractured approach reflects the lack of coherence and the fleeting nature of desireswithin this field. Repetitive language underscores the banality of everyday lifewithin consumer culture, further emphasizing the sense of being trapped in ameaningless cycle. Underworld, in contrast, explores a multitude of interconnectedfields – academia, the corporate world, the criminal underworld. Juxtaposition andmultiple perspectives become crucial tools for capturing this complexity. DeLillocontrasts the experiences of characters within different fields, exposing the starkinequalities within American society. Employing multiple perspectives allows thereader to witness the power struggles and anxieties from various vantage points, revealing the interconnectedness of these social structures. By comparing andcontrasting the narrative techniques used in White Noise and Underworld, thispaper demonstrates how DeLillo tailors his approach to the specific thematicconcerns of each novel. In White Noise, fragmentation and repetition effectivelycapture the anxieties of consumer culture. In Underworld, juxtaposition, multipleperspectives, and a more expansive narrative structure illuminate the complexitiesof power, competition, and the struggle for meaning within a labyrinth ofinterconnected social fields. Ultimately, DeLillo's masterful use of narrativetechniques allows him to create two distinct yet impactful portraits of the Americansocial landscape.
