چکیده مقاله:

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer worldwide and the fourth deadliest, with around ۹۰۰,۰۰۰ deaths annually. Circulating progastrin (hPG۸۰) is an emerging biomarker linked to cancer stem cell renewal, detectable in higher concentrations in the blood of cancer patients compared to healthy individuals. Recent research suggests that hPG۸۰ may predict the effectiveness of anticancer treatments and serve as a prognostic tool for survival, monitoring disease recurrence, and treatment response in CRC and other cancers. This study aims to explore the relationship between serum progastrin levels and clinicopathologic features in CRC patients. Methods: Eighty-eight participants were included in the study, comprising ۴۴ CRC patients and ۴۴ healthy controls from Imam Khomeini Hospital in Sari, Iran. CRC in the case group was confirmed through clinical and pathological evaluations. The control group consisted of individuals who had normal colonoscopy results. Both groups were matched for age and sex. Blood samples were collected, and serum progastrin levels were measured using an ELISA kit. Statistical analysis was conducted with SPSS ۲۰, considering a p-value of less than ۰.۰۵ as significant. Results: A total of ۸۲ (۴۱ cases and ۴۱ controls) individuals were evaluated. The mean age was ۵۹.۴۸ ± ۱۱.۵۱ and ۵۹.۴۸ ± ۱۱.۵۱ years in CRC patients and healthy individuals respectively. The mean serum levels of hPG۸۰ were ۱.۷۴ ± ۰.۲۶ pg/mL and ۱.۵۴ ± ۰.۵۵ pg/mL in patients with CRC and the control group correspondingly. The mean serum level of progastrin was higher in case group than that of the control and it was a significant difference (p-value= ۰.۰۴۷). Neither of the clinicopathological features of CRC patients exhibited a significant difference regarding progastrin serum level. Conclusion: : Progastrin serum level was significantly higher in CRC cases than healthy individuals. However, the clinicopathological features of CRC patients were not associated with progastrin serum level.
