The Relationship between University EFL Learners’ Receptive Knowledge of Collocations and Word-Frequency Levels

The present study aims to shed light on the relationship between university English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) learners’ receptive knowledge of collocations and the first three thousand most frequent words. The participants were ۷۳ university EFL students whose Vocabulary Levels Test was analyzed. Findings revealed that university EFL students had a moderate understanding of the four types of collocations (i.e., noun+noun, noun+verb, adjective+noun, verb+noun). Moreover, the data showed that the learners’ receptive knowledge of the collocations decreased as the level of word frequency increased.
