چکیده مقاله:
This study aimed at investigating the effect of simulation games on pre-intermediate EFL learners’ speaking ability and speaking anxiety. To do this, ۸۲ students were selected. From the ۵۴ participants that were selected as the result of homogeneity test, ۲۷ were randomly assigned to the control group and ۲۷ served as the experimental group. The participants assigned to the experimental group would learn how to play the video game for speaking ability, whereas the participants of the control group met in a traditional class to practice and drill the same ability. At week five (۱۲۰ hours), the posttest was administered to both groups. In addition, the experimental group received a questionnaire which sought to capture the group’s views about learning via video games. The results revealed that implementing games as a stress-free tool of learning has the potentiality of reducing EFL learners’ anxiety to improve their speaking skill. Findings led to the conclusion that the experimental group outperformed the control group in speaking ability and speaking anxiety. The product of this study can help curriculum designers; language instructors and practitioners appreciate the importance of simulation games.
