Background and aims: Artificial intelligence (AI) utilizes machines to mimic human intelligentbehaviors. In recent years, Artificial intelligence (AI) has made deep inroads into dentistry. Thisreview aimed to show the improvement of AI applications that are used in dentistry broadly andevaluate their performance in terms of clinical decision-making, diagnosis, and predicting theprognosis of the treatment process.Method: A comprehensive search had been conducted in five databases: PubMed, Google Scholar,Magiran, Elmnet, Civilica. Our study comprises a review of papers published between ۲۰۱۸ toMarch ۲۰۲۳ that reported the role of AI in dentistry diagnosis, prediction, detection, and clinicaldecision-making.Results: A total of ۱۹۶ relevant studies were retrieved from our databases, of which ۲۵ eligiblestudies met all criteria for inclusion in this narrative study. AI-based technologies are widely implementedin an extensive range of dentistry specialties. AI has been utilized in the diagnosis anddetection of dental caries, vertical root fractures, maxillofacial cysts, apical lesions, cancerouslesions, salivary gland diseases, periodontal diseases, maxillary sinusitis, TMJ disorders, cervicallymph nodes metastasis, osteoporosis, alveolar bone loss, predicting orthodontic extractions, orthodontictreatments, cephalometric analysis, determination of gender and age. By having largerdata sets AI can predict the precancerous occurrence conditions. AI can aid in population-widesurveillance and also in making decisions about referrals to specialists. AI can detect micro featuresthat are beyond the human eye efficiently and also in critical diagnosis, AI can augment itspredictive power. The advantages of AI are better precision, efficiency, and time saving during thetreatment planning and diagnosis.Conclusion: The review of these studies shows that the performance of an automated systemthat is based on AI is outstanding. They mimic the accuracy and precision of trained specialists.Some studies indicated that these systems were even able to outstrip dental specialists in terms ofprecision and performance. The future implications of AI in dentistry promise a novel formationof practicing dentistry.
