Introduction: Vitamin D plays an important role in cancer prevention. Vitamin D acts like a transcription factor that influences central mechanisms of tumorigenesis including: growth, cell differentiation, and apoptosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the vitamin D status and the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in the people of Jirof city, Kerman Province, south of Iran. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, ۵۲۴۳ people were selected during ۲۰۱۵-۲۰۱۹. Serum ۲۵(OH) D level was measured by VIDAS ۲۵-OH vitamin D total testing kits. Levels used for definitions were deficient, D۳ < ۲۰ ng/ml; insufficient, D۳ ۲۰-۳۰ ng/ml; adequate, D۳ ۳۰-۱۰۰ ng/ml and potential toxicity, >۱۰۰ ng/ml. Results: The mean of vitamin D was ۲۶.۰۳ ng/ml and ۲۴.۱۹ ng/ml in men and women, respectively (P = ۰.۰۰۳). The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was ۴۱.۵۵% and ۵۱.۷% in men and women, respectively. A significant relationship was seen between age and level of vitamin D (P = ۰.۰۰۱). Conclusions: The results of our study showed that vitamin D deficiency is common among general population especially in women in Jirof city, Kerman Province, south of Iran. Serious plans are needed to improve the status of vitamin D in the people of the region.
