Effects of aqueous extract of Teucrium polium on lipid profile in Streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats

چکیده مقاله:
Background and objective: Diabetes mellitus is almost associated with Dyslipidemia which include reduced HDL and cholesterol concentration, high amount of plasma triglyceride and increased level of small dense LDL-cholesterol particles. These abnormal amounts of lipids in the blood, is one of the major risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. This study was performed to evaluate the Effects of aqueous extract of Teucrium polium on lipid profile in Streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Materials and methods: After preparing of aqueous extract of Teucrium polium ,4 weeks old male wistar rats, became diabetic by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (50 mg/kg). they were randomly divided into Five groups: 1- model group (diabetic group), 2-diabetic group was gavaged T. polium (100 mg/kg) ,3- diabetic group was gavaged T. polium (200 mg/kg) 4- normal group (non diabetic) was gavaged T. polium (100 mg/kg), 5- normal group was gavaged normal saline(1ml). Rat lipid profile was Measured with ROUSH kits. Obtained data were analyzed by SPSS (version 24) Software and statistical ANOVA and Tukey Tests. Findings: Treatment of diabetic rats with aqueous extract of T. polium, induced significant(p<0.05) reduction of total plasma cholesterol as compared with model group. Treatment with a dose of 100 and 200 mg/kg of T. polium lowered cholesterol levels significantly (p=0.043, p=0.01 respectively) but in group 4, we did not observe significant reduction as compared with normal group. (p= 0.293), also Treatment with doses of 100 and 200 resulted in a significant reduction in TG level (p=0.015, p=0.001 respectively). Conclusion: The treatment of Teucrium polium, induced a dose-dependent reduction in plasma concentration of lipid profile. As the matter of fact, treatment with T. polium, can significantly reduce the concentration of cholesterol and triglyceride levels and prevents hyperlipidimic related disorders.
