Translation of Taboos in Dubbing of SpongeBob Series Based on Venuti

Translation of taboos regarding the fact that the item is related to children makes it more difficult than other areas oftranslation. The present research focused on taboo dubbing in the animated series of SpongeBob SquarePants (1999)based on Venuti’s model of translation. The researcher has watched fifteen episodes of the first season randomly.The categorization of taboo translation is including Non-taboo, Deletion, Euphemism, and Non-taboo to taboo, andtaboo to less taboo.Since the research is the mix method (quantitative-qualitative method), a questionnaire has beendevised to give a test from the mothers who had children between 2 to 10 years of age. The questionnaire distributedthrough 30 mothers in a kindergarten. In addition, the researcher had an interview including three questions from socalled mothers. From the result it can be concluded that the mothers were worried about their kids, consideringinappropriate words, in dubbed version of cartoons. In addition, Non-taboo to taboo with 49.23% shows thatSpongeBob translators used taboo words to make the cartoon more fun.
