چکیده مقاله:

Background and aim: Loss of enough blood perfusion to different organs of the body including brain and skull can be affected by any circulation abnormalities. The purpose of this study is to compare cephalometric indexes between neonates under age of 12 months with congenital heart disease (CHD) and normal ones. Method: This cases-control study carried out on infants with the age of one to 12 months admitted in Heshmat heart hospital, 17 Shahrivar hospital and Golhaye Iran kindergarten in Rasht with and without CHD. Cephalometric indexes, anatomical dimensions of head and face were measured with Martin spreading caliper and graded band and then volume and weight of brain, and head and face indexes were calculated with related formulas and were analyzed by statistical software, SPSS and independent one-sample t-test used to compare the means of the two groups. Results: The comparison of infants showed that although there is significant difference between weight, height, head length and head circumference of cases and controls (P<0.01), there is no significant difference in indexes such as volume and weight of brain, head and face width, head height. Head indexes have significant difference between two groups (P=0.011) that cases had hyperbrachycephalic head form and normal groups had brachycephalic head formation. Conclusion: The results of this study confirmed the growth retardation caused by CHD. This retardation did not lead to any major anthropometric differences. Maybe proper diagnosis and effective treatment of these abnormalities improve the quality of life of infants and children with CHD.
