OVARIAN ATRETIC FOLLICLE IN CASPIAN MINIATURE HORSE

Ovarian atretic follicles in five adult Caspian miniature horses were studied histologically. Both ovaries of each animal at the beginning of breeding season (at May) were used and were fixed with 10% buffered formalin. Routine histological laboratory method was used and µm sections were cut and stained with hematoxylin- eosin and PAS and studied under light microscope. The most obvious sign which had been observed in almost all of the atretic follicles was the changes of basal lamina of the granulosa cell layer into thick acidophilic (hyaloronized) layer, irregularly arranged around the granulosa cell layers. The other sign was deformation of granulosa cells from stratified cuboidal cells into irregularly arranged flattened cells. The theca interna changed its shape and endocrine cells diminished or completely destroyed. Instead of that the smooth muscle cells and fibroblasts enhanced.
