چکیده مقاله:

On 12 December 2015, the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 21) was held in Paris and the participating 195 countries agreed, by consensus, to the final global pact, the Paris Agreement, to reduce emissions as part of the method for reducing greenhouse gas. The members agreed to reduce their carbon output as soon as possible and to do their best to keep global warming to well below 2 degrees C . On the basis of national capabilities, financial resources available and requirements of the national development program, taking into account GHGs (Greenhouse Gases) emission scenarios, Iran intends to participate by mitigating its GHGs emission in 2030 by 4% compared to the BAU (Business As Usual) scenario [1]. This imply that a portfolio of emission reduction policies need to be utilized through current century. At present, Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology is an influential long-term strategy for carbon reduction in many countries. Implementation of CCS is a considerable option for climate mitigating in Iran due to its strategic conditions. Iran has a wide access to rich reserves of fossil fuels (oil and gas) which CO2 can be used for oil and gas recovery from the ones with pressure drops and stored in the depleted ones. Moreover, Iran has remarkable contribution on world CO2 emission (556 million tons of CO2 in 2014) which causes Iran to be the eighth great GHG emitter in the world, see Fig 1. and Fig 2. [2]) with significant rate of growth which requires reducing strategies. In this essay, barriers against deployment of the CCS technology in Iran are discussed, and then required solutions and policies are debated and the contribution and deployment of this technology in the upcoming Energy System of Iran will be assessed.
