The EU Cohesion Policy and its Underlying Principles and Values

The interest in European Union’s future is a huge one in the current period of global economic evolution, EU integration issues being a standing game between economics and politics. European Commission faces major challenges in implementing the European model – challenges posed by the EU enlargement and enhanced by the international economic slippage. There are significant differences in economic and social development of EU member states, and through cohesion policy, EU tries to project the integration path of its members, but the major constraint is related to the fact that the economic actions always have been ruled by political goals. This paper aims to answer some questions like: What is the nature of the European model? How does EU enlargement affect the process of European integration? How it seen and what is the role played by cohesion policy in the context of European integration? How does the process of enlargement influence the development and implementation of cohesion policy? Which is the best measure of achieving economic and social cohesion? In order to answer these questions in detail, this research-paper explores the functional dynamics of the European model, highlighting the main stages in the evolution of European integration, but also the main forms that European integration takes today
