SIMULATOR TO INVESTIGATE THE EFFECT OF HARMONICS IN DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS

In the past decades, analog simulators had been used to investigate the response of power systems. By the recent years these devices where replaced by digital computers. However from the training, education and research point of view the analog simulators are prferred by many academics .In this paper design and manufacture of a simulator to investigate the behavior of supply, transmission and distribution systems are presented. In particular the effect of flow of harmonic currents and voltage distortion are, investigated. The effect of power filters in reducing the signal distortion is also presented. A monitoring system for storing and analysing signals, is also discused The results obtained have shown that the harmonic currents increase the loss in the system and strongly distort the waveforms.
