چکیده مقاله:
Reducing material consumption while maintaining structural safety and performance has become a central concern in civil engineering practice, driven by cost pressures, resource scarcity, and the sustainability demands of modern urban infrastructure. Structural optimization and lightweight design methodologies, developed and refined across multiple engineering disciplines, offer transferable principles for achieving material efficiency without compromising structural performance, yet their translation into everyday civil construction remains incomplete. This review synthesizes current approaches to lightweight and efficient structural design as they apply to civil structures, organized around four interconnected themes: (۱) advanced and lightweight structural materials, including concrete and steel systems; (۲) optimization-based structural design methods that minimize material use while satisfying strength and serviceability constraints; (۳) the dynamic performance trade-offs introduced by mass reduction, particularly under seismic and wind loading, and the structural control strategies used to manage them; and (۴) the structural health monitoring and damage assessment techniques needed to maintain reliability in optimized, reduced-margin structures over their service life. Rather than treating these themes as separate technical concerns, the review argues that they form a single, coupled design problem, particularly for structure types that rarely receive individualized engineering attention. The review concludes with a discussion of practical compliance and quality-control challenges in applying these strategies to residential building construction, drawing on execution-phase experience, and identifies directions for future research connecting material efficiency, dynamic resilience, and long-term structural reliability.
