چکیده مقاله:

Background Nurses often derive a significant part of their social and psychological well-being from their professional identity as caregivers. The aim of this study was to explore how professional identity contributes to the development of mental health among nurses. Methods A descriptive phenomenological study was conducted to explore the lived experiences of nurses. Thirteen participants were selected using purposive homogeneous sampling and interviewed through an open-ended interview guide until data saturation was reached. The COREQ guideline was followed to ensure rigor in reporting this qualitative study. Results Data were analyzed using conventional content analysis. The findings revealed that nurses’ experiences of professional identity and mental health are multifaceted and interconnected. Key patterns included the perception of nurses as caregivers with strong emotional investment, the tension between professional expectations and personal well-being, and the influence of workplace culture on psychological health. Participants also reported role conflict and burnout resulting from competing professional and personal demands. In addition, alignment between personal values and professional identity contributed to a sense of pride in the profession. Nurses described the use of adaptive coping strategies and the development of resilience in response to occupational stressors, while also highlighting barriers to seeking psychological support and the importance of peer and organizational support systems. Conclusion The interplay between professional identity and mental health in nurses is complex. Strengthening supportive work environments, promoting openness toward mental health, and improving access to resources may enhance nurses’ well-being and the quality of care.
