Comparative Effects of Short-Term Creatine Monohydrate, L-Arginine, and Caffeine Supplementation on Maximal Oxygen Uptake in Trained Female Badminton Players

The present study compared the effects of short-term supplementation with creatine monohydrate, L-arginine, and caffeine on maximal oxygen uptake (VO۲max) in trained female badminton players. Fourteen trained female badminton players (۱۹.۲۴ ± ۱.۴۴ years) participated in a semi-experimental crossover study and completed three one-week supplementation protocols separated by two-week washout periods. VO۲max was measured before and after each supplementation period, and the data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Bonferroni post hoc tests. The results revealed significant differences among supplementation protocols in VO۲max (F = ۹.۵۴, p = ۰.۰۱۰). Creatine supplementation increased VO۲max from ۴۴.۹۹ ± ۴.۱۰ to ۴۸.۴۲ ± ۲.۱۶ mL kg·min, whereas L-arginine and caffeine increased VO۲max from ۴۴.۱۲ ± ۴.۳۹ to ۴۶.۱۲ ± ۲.۴۰ and from ۴۴.۱۲ ± ۴.۲۹ to ۴۵.۴۱ ± ۴.۲۲ mL kg·min, respectively. The greatest improvement was observed following creatine supplementation (+۳.۴۳ mL kg·min), followed by L-arginine (+۲.۰۰ mL kg·min) and caffeine (+۱.۲۹ mL kg·min). These findings indicate that short-term creatine monohydrate supplementation is more effective than L-arginine and caffeine in enhancing aerobic capacity in trained female badminton players and may represent a practical nutritional strategy for improving endurance-related performance in this population.
