A scientometric review of the post-industrial landscape

Various studies on the redevelopment of abandoned industrial sites have been conducted in recent decades. The variety of perspectives has made it difficult to identify the key areas of knowledge required for dealing with these sites. Accordingly, this study aims to identify the knowledge domain of the post-industrial landscape, explaining how it develops and expands. To this end, scientometric analysis was employed and the PRISMA protocol was used to identify relevant sources of information. The resulting data were analyzed using scientometric analysis software, including Biblioshiny and VOSviewer v۱.۶.۲۰. This study identified ۲۲,۴۵۰ primary sources from the Scopus database. After screening based on the aforementioned protocol, ۸۰۱ research articles published between ۱۹۹۸ and ۲۰۲۵ were evaluated and analyzed. The results show that research in this field focuses on four main areas: sustainable development considering historical, socio-cultural, and economic aspects (۳۸%); land use planning (۲۸%); ecological restoration (۲۳%); and environmental concerns (۱۹%). The field has evolved through three distinct phases, positioning post-industrial sites within sustainable urban frameworks and circular economies. This trajectory shows how post-industrial landscape research has developed into a transdisciplinary field that recognizes these spaces as complex socio-ecological systems that offer unique opportunities for sustainable urban development, rather than merely as contaminated sites requiring remediation.
