چکیده مقاله:

Listening comprehension, traditionally regarded as an internal and less directly observable process, has posed persistent challenges for empirical investigation and pedagogical evaluation in second language education (Chastain, ۱۹۸۸). In response to this gap, and in line with contemporary scholarship highlighting the pedagogical value of task-based instruction (e.g., Mirzayee, ۲۰۲۱), the present study examined the efficacy of listen-and-do tasks in fostering both listening comprehension and metacognitive awareness among Iranian EFL learners. Sixty intermediate learners were randomly assigned to an experimental group (n = ۳۰) and a control group (n = ۳۰). Over sixteen instructional sessions, the experimental group received systematic training through task-based listen-and-do activities, whereas the control group was taught the same listening materials via conventional teacher-fronted methods. Following the intervention, participants completed a standardized Listening Comprehension Post-test and the Metacognitive Awareness Listening Questionnaire (MALQ). Independent-samples t-test analyses revealed statistically significant differences between the groups, with the experimental group demonstrating superior performance in both listening comprehension and metacognitive awareness. These findings provide robust empirical support for the integration of task-based activities into EFL listening pedagogy, underscoring its dual role in enhancing receptive skills and promoting learners’ strategic regulation of listening processes. The study contributes to the growing body of evidence advocating for active, task-oriented methodologies in the Iranian EFL context and offers pedagogical implications for curriculum designers and practitioners seeking to cultivate higher-order listening competencies.
