A Comparative Analysis of the Legal and Social Status of Transgender Individuals in Iran and France

Transgender individuals are among the groups who simultaneously face legal, social, and identity challenges in many societies. The way legal systems and social structures address these individuals plays a decisive role in their access to civil rights, psychological security, the possibility of living with dignity, and social participation. This paper, using a descriptive-analytical and comparative method, aims to investigate the commonalities and differences between the two countries in terms of laws related to gender identity, access to healthcare, social support, and the degree of public acceptance. This research, adopting a comparative approach, examines the legal and social status of transgender individuals in two distinct contexts: Iran and France. Iran is among the countries with a specific and unique framework concerning the possibility of changing identity documents and the official recognition of some processes related to gender identity. In contrast, France, as a country with a secular legal system based on human rights principles, has undergone several reforms in recent years regarding the recognition of gender identity and support for transgender individuals, although this country is not without its cultural and social challenges. Ultimately, this research emphasizes the importance of an interdisciplinary perspective on the issue of transgender people and the necessity of strengthening legal and social mechanisms to guarantee their human dignity.
