Developing Ultra-High-Performance Concrete Using Local Materials from West Azerbaijan: An Experimental Study

Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) possesses outstanding mechanical and physical properties, making it ideal for critical infrastructure projects like bridges, skyscrapers, and tunnels. UHPC is characterized by its remarkable compressive strength, exceptional durability, and superior performance in extreme environmental conditions. It is manufactured using a combination of mineral and chemical additives, such as superplasticizers, optimized aggregate gradation, low water-to-cement ratios, and nanomaterials. This study explored the feasibility of developing UHPC using local materials from West Azerbaijan province, focusing primarily on aggregate gradation, water-to-cement ratio, and micro silica (MS). Specimens were prepared under standardized conditions and cured in a saturated lime-water tank at a controlled temperature of ۲۳ ± ۱°C until testing. Compressive strength tests were conducted on ۱۰۰ mm cubic specimens. The results showed that using locally sourced basalt aggregate from the Zola Dam region in Salmas City, a ۲۸-day compressive strength of approximately ۱۵۴ MPa was achieved. This study demonstrates the feasibility of producing UHPC with local materials from West Azerbaijan Province, exhibiting desirable mechanical properties and offering a sustainable, economically beneficial alternative that reduces environmental impacts, including CO۲ emissions from transportation.
