Adaptive Reuse of Industrial Heritage: From Decline to Socio-Economic Activation

Adaptive reuse of industrial heritage has attracted the attention of researchers and urban planners as a key strategy in sustainable urban development. This study aimed to analyze the social and economic impacts of adaptive reuse of industrial heritage, based on nine successful international examples in Europe, Asia, and North and South America. The examples studied include Tate Modern (UK), High Line (USA), Gasometer Wien (Austria), Wychwood Barns (Canada), Santral Istanbul (Turkey), Cukrarna Gallery (Slovenia), Kumst Creative Hub (Czech Republic), Fábrica de Hielo (Spain), and Casa Jelinek (Italy). The findings show that adaptive reuse helps to strengthen social interaction, develop public and cultural spaces, create collaborative networks between the community and artists, and promote a sense of social belonging. From an economic perspective, these projects also attract investment, increase tourism, create job opportunities, and develop local and creative businesses. Comparing the examples showed that projects that simultaneously address social and economic dimensions have more sustainable impacts on urban development. The research also emphasizes that the success of adaptive regeneration depends on active community participation, supportive policies, appropriate siting, and a multidimensional approach to project design and management. The findings can provide practical guidance for policymakers and urban planners and promote the social, economic, and cultural value of industrial heritage in urban planning.
