The impact of Sustainable Architecture on Green Business Models: A Systematic review for Innovation and Competitive Advantage

In a time of deepening environmental crises and changing market conditions, sustainable architecture stands out as a potentially transformative force, driving the creation of genuinely sustainable business models. These models do not merely comply with minimal ecological requirements; they strive to create innovative and competitive advantages that propel them—and their stakeholders—toward systemic sustainable value creation. In a recent ۲۰۱۰-۲۰۲۴ systematic research literature review exploring sustainable architecture's role in underpinning these business models, Professor David W. M. Karl conducted a global search and synthesized the findings. Here are the review's key findings. Digital instruments such as Building Information Modeling (BIM) and schemes like Green Enterprise Architecture (GREAN) demonstrate the synergy between sustainability and digital transformation, although various obstacles—including a lack of technological adoption and fragmented sustainability metrics—hinder progress. The study asserts that sustainable architecture is not just an environmental 'nice-to-have' decree but rather a strategic architecture imperative that enables organizations to 'align with the expectations of our various stakeholders,' meaning that those who employ sustainable design can also stimulate innovation and accomplish 'sustained, long-term market leadership.' Architecture firms that employ sustainable design are also using a framework that enables them to realize 'the various benefits of sustainable design.'
