چکیده مقاله:
The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between vocabularyacquisition level and reading comprehension ability of Iranian EFL learners.Theparticipants of this study were selected ۴۵۰ from the English department in undergraduatelevel at Ahvaz university of Khoustan.The instruments used TOEFL readingcomprehension subtest (TOEFL-RBC) is a standardized multiple-choice readingcomprehension test. Participants attending the test must read five passages that expressgeneral academic subjects and answer ۳۰ multiple-choice questions for each passage.Data were collected by questionnaire from ۸۱ learners undergraduate level of Englishbetween their age ranged from ۱۹ and ۲۱. Data were analyzed through the inferentialstatistics used in this study was Pearson Correlation analyses. Two-tailed productmomentcorrelations were computed for scores from the vocabulary acquisition level andreading comprehension to find any possible relationship between the two variables. Thedata were computed by means of the statistical package SPSS version ۲۱. The resultsshowed that Pearson Correlation analyses showed a significant positive relationshipbetween vocabulary acquisition level and reading comprehension The Pearson’scorrelation tests indicate positive and significant relationships (r =۰.۵۹۹ P<۰.۰۱) forvocabulary acquisition level .The findings suggest that giving awareness of vocabularyacquisition level to the students along with making them conscious of their ability givesthem a broader sense of the depth of reading comprehension texts and improves theirreading ability. Implications suggest the findings of this research can be used by arelationship between other factors of individual differences in background characteristicssuch as L۱ background knowledge and the reading comprehension ability of languagelearners.
