In this paper, the implications of ChatGPT for language teaching are explored within the framework of Paulo Freire's critical pedagogy. Recent research highlights both promising opportunities for personalized and interactive learning, as well as risks such as cultural bias, plagiarism, and passive learning. Freire's concepts of 'banking' versus empowering, dialogic education offer a relevant lens for analysis. While acknowledging ChatGPT's potential, a Freirean perspective emphasizes the need to ensure its integration aligns with goals of equity, social justice, and the development of critical consciousness. Strategies proposed include enhancing students' AI literacy, co-creating localized learning scenarios, promoting learner agency, ensuring access, and establishing ethical guidelines. Through adherence to Freire's ideals, ChatGPT can potentially catalyze transformative shifts in language education. This conceptual exploration deepens our comprehension of AI's implications for language pedagogy and advocates for an ethical approach forward.
